Yo tuve el mismo problema. Resolví en google api consola >> pantalla de consentimiento, y añadiendo un nombre de producto.

En la actividad principal se necesita cambiar .addApi(Plus.API, null) por .addApi(Plus.API, Plus.PlusOptions.builder().build())

Para mí el problema era que no había creado las credenciales para la aplicación.

Fue a la Consola de desarrolladores de Google> Credenciales> Crear nuevo ID de cliente

Llenado el nombre del paquete correspondiente y SHA1 para mi aplicación, reran la aplicación y luego funcionó!
